There are some technical concepts that are related to reading that you must know if reading is an important part of your job or daily routine as only if you are aware of these technicalities can you work on your reading habits that may be stopping you from picking up your speed. Read them, understand them, adopt them and see the kind of difference it makes in your life.

  1. Sub vocalisation: sub vocalisation is the process of saying each work to self in your mind while engaged in the process of reading. This process of sub vocalisation is a time consuming process and it is easy and possible to absorb the information without actually doing this activity. But is it possible to stop this activity of sub vocalisation by effort or practice and how can one do it? The first thing that is required to be done is to accept that you have this habit of sub vocalisation and then you got to practice repeatedly that you don’t have to do this and gradually you would be able to train your mind to only use your eyes while reading and not duplicate the process with your lips and you would see the habit going away and how positively this affects your speed.
  2. Not reading in blocks: if you are in the habit of reading word individually, it gets difficult to grasp the meaning of the sentence in one go. If you group the words and practice to read them not individually but rather as blocks, you absorb the meaning in a bigger picture and save time considerably. The effort should be towards reading a bigger block of words in a single attempt so that understanding of the work can be quickened.
  3. Inefficient gaze: People who are slow in reading are the ones who do not use their gaze with 100% efficiency. The eye span is of about 1.5 inch in one go. A lot of people do not encompass their complete vision as they only focus with the centre of the eye and do not use their peripheral vision. If you soften your gaze when you read, automatically, in due course of time your eye span will increase and the number of words that you read in one go will increase.

So basically, speed in reading is all about getting rid of old and rigid reading habits and develop more productive and better reading habits.
